Colnago has joined the aerodynamic arms race with the brand new Concept, a full blooded aero race bike that is a serious step forward from the Italian company's first aero road bike, the V1-rfrom a couple of years ago. I've heard some people accuse Colnago of being a traditional company, and when you look at the C60, the company's current flagship road bike, it's easy to see why. Lugged carbon frames look dated compared to the smooth and swoopy moulded carbon frames that populate the road bike market.

But the company has a pioneering drive. Way back in Colnago developed one of the earliest carbon fibre road bikes in collaboration with Ferrari no less. It was called the Concept and while it never actually went into production, the lessons learned did eventually find their way into its first production carbon road bike, the legendary C Launched inthe C40 paved the way for carbon fibre race bikes.

It won the tough Paris-Roubaix at the first time of trying and effectively helped to end the reign of aluminium and steel race bikes in the professional peloton. The latest C60 can trace its DNA back to that model, right down to the carbon lug and tube construction that provides its increasingly rare aesthetic in a world of moulded carbon. Fast forward 30 years and the new Concept takes the name of that early design, and is as state-of-the-art as it gets from the company. It has been extensively tested in the wind tunnel and proven to be faster than both the current C60 and V1-r.

So let's take a closer look. The new Colnago Concept aims to rival the latest aero road bikes and faces some extremely tough competition from the likes of the Canyon AeroadSpecialized Venge ViAS and Trek Madone to name a few, in a rapidly maturing category that is favoured by WorldTour professional cyclists and keen non-racing amateurs alike.

Without a doubt, the Concept has all the capability to dice with the fastest in a race situation. The Concept's stiff frame, Vision deep-section wheels and 7. It's quick in all circumstances: climbs, descents, flat and undulating roads — everywhere, the bike really shines. It's an exciting bike to ride fast, and like all good aero road bikes encourages you to ride flat-out.

That firm ride, and frame and fork stiffness ensure the Concept accurately follows your inputs, whether through the handlebar or pedals. It reacts very positively to your body language, whether you're blasting up an uphill sprint finish or bombing through a curving descent.

But all-out speed isn't all the Concept is about, and it's not just a bike for racing. The Concept provides adequate composure and comfort, allowing you to tackle long distance rides at a few notches below race pace and not be dealt a hammer-blow to the lower back the moment the tyres encounter anything but a billiard-smooth surface.

The front end of aero race bikes can often be overwhelmingly harsh, but the special headset and fork steerer tube that Colnago has developed more on that later mean it's smoother up front than would normally be expected on an aero road bike.

It's certainly not too stiff for even the most deteriorated Cotswolds roads, but make no mistake, it's a firm ride. If comfort is your top priority, an aero road bike likely isn't on your list anyway, but at least with the Concept you can have aero and a hint of comfort.

Comparisons with the C60 might be a bit unfair, but I'm going to make them anyway. The C60 offers one of the finest and most sweetly balanced rides of any bike I've yet tested. It's one of my faves. The Concept is a different beast. It's clearly better at slicing through the air and records faster times on flatter roads, but it lacks some of the liveliness and sweetness of the C It's more efficient and effective but for me lacks some of the sparkle that makes the C60 such a joy to ride.Continuing the momentum generated from the classic, the new U.

I am smiling as a hand grips my elbow. I turn to see year-old Ernesto Colnago, founder of the eponymous company, at my side. And I mean it. Permit me to boast: After nearly 20 years of bike testingI have ridden thousands of bikes. The frames weigh grams or less, yet are stiff and comfortable—and handle as though imbued with magic. Amazing, and also anonymous. The look, the feel, the performance, the story, and even the finish of all these bikes is so similar that part of the experience of the ride feels lost: a connection to the bicycle, a connection to the people and passion behind the bicycle.

On my test ride I found the C60 noticeably stiffer than the C The C60 is not anonymous. It is arguably flawed but almost completely perfect because of that.

No one else could build this bike but Colnago, something you realize when you consider the history of the brand and doting care of Ernesto. It is the only carbon Colnago made in Italy. Like most other brands, Colnago went to Taiwan for manufacturing as a matter of survival.

The company will fiercely state that the bikes made outside Italy are still Colnago, with the design, geometry, and ride characteristics coming from Italy. I asked him why it was important to make the C60 in Italy. He responded, though a translator, "I was born as a frame maker. For us it is not all about money. Our passion is to create frames, not only to design them. I want to follow the full process, from the sketch to the final shipping of the bicycle.

Making frames is part of my life and it's part of the history of my brand. That's why we still make frames here. I think we still have something good to do here in Italy. Workers clean then apply glue to frame components before construction. The frame is first assembled in a jig seen far left and then put into an oven to cure.

The Italian has also successfully positioned the company at the forefront of the industry, at first with lightweight steel and later with iconic aluminum frames.

In recent years, though, the introduction of carbon as a material for frames has not only disrupted the market but has given it a new direction. Numerous brands have since challenged the boundaries of frame design. Colnago, however, stayed true to himself and his principles. At 86 years of age, he is still the leader of his vision. He continues to push limits while maintaining a uniquely recognizable style. The C64 is proof of that. The Colnago C64 was launched to mark the 64th anniversary of the company.

It is presented as the r evolution of a species. With a nod to its predecessors, the new top-end race bike maintains recognizable lines, whilst receiving several new developments. It offers an increased vertical compliance, greater tire clearance and also weighs less, due to the revised design of the trademark lugs and tubes.

One of the main differences lies within the bottom bracket lug. To develop the bottom bracket lug Colnago partnered with CeramicSpeed. Taking pride in building high-end products by hand in their respective facilities this collaboration was an obvious one for both brands. The goal for the technical designers was to create a bottom bracket that would combine the reliability of threaded cups with the benefits of wider shells, typical for PressFit systems.

In conjunction they developed the ThreadFit The whole process was completed in less than four months: Precision engineered. Either way, there is a strong case to be made for the Colnago C60 Disc. And compared to the C60 without discs, it is barely grams heavier.

The star-shaped tubes of lore have been bulked up to accommodate the massively stiff bottom bracket, though the larger diameter of the tubes means that the walls can be made thinner, reducing weight.

The increased size of the bottom bracket means that Colnago can use their clever ThreadFit82 that utilizes screw-in alloy cups within a press fit BB design.

Moving out from the oversized bottom bracket, the specially ribbed chainstays work together with the forged CNC one piece rear dropouts to increase lateral stiffness without adding weight. The mono-seatstay also works with the shape of the chainstays to help absorb vibrations while keeping the rear triangle stiff and responsive.

The derailleur hanger is replaceable and has been designed to be the break point in case of a crash, to save your dropouts from being damaged. Since the C60 Disc does stick with the lugged method of building, that means there is an almost unlimited number of size options from sloping to standard to high.
